Platinum Training Facility had thirteen competitors represent the team this past Saturday at the annual London Open Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament.

The local tournament, back for the first time after a two-year COVID stint, saw nearly 600 competitors from more than 100 academies across Ontario. Platinum ranked 16th overall for best team with two gold, five silver, and two bronze placements.

The Pigeons’ youth jiu jitsu team was fiercely represented by Rowynn Brown (-65), Liam Wright (-78.5), Hamza Abu Suleiman (-78.5), Mason Tonello (-113), Brayden Capstick (-78.5) and Myla Capstick (-78.5). Liam took home a bronze medal while Hamza, Mason, Brayden and Myla were each awarded silver in their respective divisions.

The adult Pigeons’ team boasted seven competitors across four divisions: Kent Taylor (White/Light), Logan White (Blue/Middle), Cameron Hewitt (Purple/Medium Heavy), Jessie Van Lierop (Brown/Ultraheavy), Francesca DeNoble (White/Light) and first-time competitors Max Enns (White/Light) and Josh Berard (White/Ultraheavy). Jessie ranked silver in his division and went on to compete in the Brown/Black Absolute (open-weight), Francesca took gold in her division, and Cameron placed third in his weight class before circling back for gold in the Purple Absolute division.

“Words can’t describe the feelings of pride and admiration for every single competitor who tested their jiu jitsu at the London Open,” shared Head BJJ Coach, Aaron Esdon. “From thrilling submission finishes to dominant wins via points, the Platinum Pigeon flock proved what happens when we come together as a team and work towards a common goal. Even in the bitter defeats, there was so much to learn and take away from the matches. Congratulations to every single competitor, and a big thank you to all the training partners who helped prepare the warriors for their respective battles.”
